Blizzard have revealed more details about how teams and players in their new OWL will be assembled and paid. “All 30 million+ Overwatch players (that are of majority age and otherwise eligible to play) are considered potential free agents with respect to the Overwatch League.” Said Blizzard in a statement early Thursday morning.
Teams will have from 1st August – 30th October to sign players, but this will be changed after the first year to suit an established league. Players will be signed on a minimum 1 year contract, with an option to resign for a second year.
Players will be paid a minimum of $50,000 per year. They will also be provided with health insurance, a retirement savings plan and each players will receive 50% of their ‘team performance bonus’ such as prize money.
Teams must have a minimum of 6 players on their team, with a maximum of 12. Housing and practice facilities must be provided to players during the season, “which will meet professional standards set by the Overwatch League.”
